The film which gave birth to a legend and started the boom in
Japanese Kaiju movie, Godzilla ( the name is a modification of the Japanese
Gojira, which was created by combining the Japanese words for gorilla and
whale: gorira+kujira) is designed loosely around the concept of a
dinosaur but the number of designs was cut back by the production staff.
In the end, art director Akira Watanabe designed Godzilla based on a drawing by cartoonist Wasuke Abe Teizou Toshimitsu sculpting the original clay model.
The original Godzilla suit was built using the plastic test version and weighed in at nearly 100kg.
The next version, while quite a bit lighter, was still rather hefty, at 60kg. Fans refer to this design as Shogozi ("First Godzilla").
